It was an almost quixotic triumph (which also included Country Email List injustices against another people, as happened with the Palestinians) of that small group of secular Jews who called themselves Zionists. While it is true that some religious also participated in Country Email List the early days of the movement, the vast majority of them did not see the need to create a Jewish national state as imperative, much less one created by non-believing Jews with a socialist Country Email List orientation. Before the 20th century, the majority of the Jewish inhabitants of Eretz Israel, the Holy Land or Country Email List Palestine (the name given to the territory in question by each of the three monotheistic religions) were ultra-Orthodox and, despite the fact that the different Muslim governments that controlled the place prevented Country Email List them from exercising their full religious freedom (Jews were not allowed to enter the Tomb of Abraham in Hebron or even blow the shofar—religious instrument— at the Wailing Wall), they assumed that the Country Email List redemption of the Jewish people in their original land should be messianic. However, the situation would partially change with the arrival of the Third Reich in Europe and the beginning of the Jewish extermination on that continent (it is interesting to note that even today many ultra-Orthodox believe that the Shoah was divine punishment for Jewish Country Email List assimilation in Europe). Suddenly, the anti-Zionist rabbis grouped in the Agudath Israel movement (which was born as a group of observers who opposed Zionism and today constitute a political party with Country Email List representation in the Israeli Parliament) recognized the importance of a Jewish State and went from being « anti-Zionists” to “non-Zionists”, a detail that, although it seems small, ended up Country Email List altering paradigms. Thus, the immigration of the ultra-Orthodox or Haredim.
